The year is 872, and many of the separate kingdoms of what we now know as England have fallen to the invading Danes, leaving the great kingdom of Wessex standing alone and defiant under the command of King Alfred. Against this turbulent backdrop lives our hero, Uhtred. Born the son of a Saxon nobleman, he is captured by the Danes and raised as one of their own. Forced to choose between the country of his birth and the people of his upbringing, his loyalties are ever tested. What is he? Saxon or Dane? On a quest to reclaim his birthright, Uhtred must tread a dangerous path between both sides if he is to play his part in the birth of a new nation and, ultimately, recapture his ancestral lands…

Did You Know?

This series timeline is historically accurate, unlike the similar series “Vikings”. Both series show the invasion by the Great Heathen Army. “Vikings” shows this invasion as taking place during the reign of King Ecbert (reign 839-858)(Alfred’s grandfather) when in fact it takes place in the closing days of the reign of King Aethelred I (reign 865-871), Alfred’s brother and predecessor, as shown in The Last Kingdom.

A Dane in the 9th century would probably not have been named “Kjartan” as the name is a Norse appropriation of a Irish name that was adopted by the Norse-Gaelic settlers of Iceland.

The Last Kingdom Reviews

This series is one of the best ever. As one of the characters said, “It is life.” So much happens…. characters live and die, sometimes unexpectedly and certainly not what you wanted to happen. Despite being set in the 9th century, the series makes it clear that politics and power have not changed and The Last Kingdom amply demonstrates this. The role of religion and the power of the church also are treated as they should be…. sometimes good and sometimes evil, just as humans are. Watch it. I can hardly wait for season 4.
